Fun First, Study Later

My mom used to require me to come home right after school and do nothing but get my homework done and study. Although I understand her reasoning (that way my work would be done and the rest of the time I could spend doing what I want), I tend to disagree with her as I get older. When I was younger, I was able to get most of my homework done at school and was very determined to do so because I wanted to play as soon as got home. However, now, as a freshman, there are many days that no matter how much effort I put into getting my homework finished before school is out, I find that I still have to bring some home to do. When we get out of school we don't want to do more work right away but would rather wait and do it after we have had some fun. I say this because when we get out of school we are not thinking about school and what we learned, but instead, we are thinking about what we are going to do to have fun in the next couple of hours. If kids have to go straight home
to do homework or study, the quality of their work will probably be very poor. I know this from experience. Another reason I think kids should be able to get their playing done before doing their homework is because in the winter the sun goes down so early. I mean, when we get home from school there is only about one to two hours of daylight left in the day. When parents make kids do their homework first, kids miss the sunlight which means they can't play outside. Over a long period of time, kids will put on more weight and get in worse shape if they don't get enough exercise. This could be the result of not letting kids play outside before the sun goes down. I have also concluded that kids don't score as well on tests when they have to study before playing, not necessarily for the same reason as doing homework before playing, but because kids remember what they have studied better if they study before they go to sleep. These are just some of the numerous reasons why kids
should be able to play when they get home, before doing their homework or studying for their tests.
